The Provisional Assembly, the first modern parliament in Korea and the forerunner of South Korea’s National Assembly, was established on April 10, 1919.

It selected Daehanminguk(the Republic of Korea) for the national name and era name and enacted the Provisional Charter of the Republic of Korea,
the first democratic constitution for Korea, in an effort to help sustain the Korean Provisional Government over twenty-seven years.

The most important values that connect the Provisional Assembly to the National Assembly are democracy and republicanism.
The legislature reflects the fundamental principle of the Republic of Korea’s constitution that sovereignty rests with the people.

This exhibition sheds light on the history of the Republic of Korea’s legislature as it began with the Provisional Assembly and continues through the National Assembly.
It is hoped that the exhibition will provide an opportunity to appreciate the birth, survival, and development of the legislature of the Republic of Korea.
